Water heeft in belangrijke mate het aanzien van Nederland bepaald. Overstromingen en stormen, rivieren en getijden hebben hier tientallen eilanden doen ontstaan. 

Door de eeuwen heen hebben de Nederlanders getracht die eilanden tegen het geweld van het water te beschermen en, waar mogelijk, te vergroten. Soms tevergeefs, maar meestal met succes. Die strijd gaat de komende eeuwen door, zeker nu de stijging van de zeespiegel door de opwarming van de aarde ons voor nieuwe uitdagingen zal stellen.

Deze site is een impressie in woord en beeld van de Nederlandse eilanden. Hij is nog niet af en zal worden aangevuld naarmate ik in de nabije toekomst andere Nederlandse eilanden zal bezoeken.

Water has shaped the appearance of The Netherlands to a significant extent. Storms and floods, rivers and tides have formed dozens of islands here.

Through the ages the Dutch have been working to secure those islands against the force of the water and, where possible, to enlarge them. Sometimes in vain, but mostly with success. That struggle will continue in the centuries to come, certainly as the rising of the sea level caused by global warming will present us with new challenges.

This site is a impression in words and pictures of the islands of the Netherlands. It is not complete yet and I plan to add more to it as I will be visiting other Dutch islands in the near future.
